Developer oceancucumber wandered into the Ultima Dragons Discord server in early February of 2025, and very casually dropped a link to this project with little fanfare…and to the great surprise of the server community.
The development goals for the project are to re-create Ultima 8 as much as possible using the Godot engine. That said, oceancucumber does have a few changes in mind for the game: jumping puzzles will not be a significant part of the gameplay, and the Eight Virtues will be factored into the plot in some way. The morally dubious situations that Ultima 8 threw at the Avatar will also see some changes; the Avatar will have to strive to be a positive example, and things like theft and murder will carry grave consequences. The magic system will see an overhaul as well, as will the combat.
To date, oceancucumber has been working on the game’s core systems, the city of Tenebrae and the Pearl Palace, and daily NPC schedules to bring the game’s characters (and world) to life.
